              <text>PAGE 1 : Marie Bonnevial, notre Présidente vénérée, notre grande amie, n’est plus ; notre douleur est si grande qu’aujourd’hui nous ne pouvons y croire. Elle était la bonté et le dévouement personnifiés ; c’est pour cela que partout et toujours elle sut imposer l’estime et le respect. Elle avait des adversaires, certes, mais point d’ennemis. Tous ceux qui la connurent l’aimèrent, pour sa bienveillance, son esprit clair, son sentiment profond de justice. Née à Rives-de-Giers, le 28 juin 1841, dans une famille très modeste, elle fut élevée à Lyon par un oncle qui était forgeron et une tante qui exerçait la profession de blanchisseuse. Souvent elle me parlait de ses jeunes années dont elle avait gardé le plus doux souvenir, malgré le dur labeur. Douée pour l’étude, Marie Bonnevial était la meilleure élève de l’école, et elle n’eut pas trop de peine à convaincre ses parents qu’ils devaient la laisser en classe jusqu’au jour où elle obtiendrait le diplôme qui lui permettait d’enseigner. Elle put alors réaliser son rêve et devenir institutrice. La guerre de 1870 survint. Marie Bonnevial eut à cette époque la même attitude qu’en 1914. Foncièrement pacifiste, elle avait l’horreur de la force brutale, mais elle pensait que le devoir de tout bon Français était de défendre son pays contre l’envahisseur. PAGE 2 : Avec quelques autres femmes de la ville, elle ouvrit une souscription et recueillit des fonds assez importants pour faire fondre un canon auquel on donna le nom de « La ville de Lyon ».&#13;
Mais après la guerre et la Commune, survint l’Ordre moral. Tout ce qui était républicain, libre penseur, socialiste, fut traqué et poursuivi impitoyablement. Or Marie Bonnevial avait pris une part ardente aux luttes politiques ; elle avait organisé l’enseignement laïque à Lyon où elle dirigeait une école ; elle ne pouvait donc éviter la répression. Traduite devant un conseil de discipline, puis devant le tribunal correctionnel, elle fut condamnée et défense lui fut faite d’enseigner en France. Cette mesure inouïe, prise contre elle, lui interdisait donc non seulement d’être institutrice publique, mais encore de donner des leçons particulières. C’était la réduire à la famine !&#13;
C’est à cette époque en 1872, que Victor Hugo lui adressa la très belle lettre que voici : &#13;
Mademoiselle,&#13;
La réaction vous frappe, là bas, à coups d’épingle, ici à coups de massue. Continuez l’œuvre sainte. Restez la patience sans la faiblesse, la résignation sans l’abaissement.&#13;

Paris le 17 Septembre.&#13;
Marie Bonnevial n’était pas une faible, et puisque la France – qu’elle aimait tant – ne lui permettait plus de gagner sa vie, elle résolut de partir. Elle s’en alla bien loin, en Turquie, rejoindre son frère et sa belle sœur, M. et Mme Paul Bonnevial, qui tenaient un commerce à Constantinople. Là, elle donna des leçons de français dans les familles nobles, dont l’une était même apparentée au Sultan. Naturellement, tout le monde connaissait l’aventure extraordinaire de cette jeune femme si mal traitée dans son pays, – car Marie Bonnevial n’aurait jamais voulu pénétrer par surprise dans une maison – et cependant elle était bien vite devenue l’amie de ces musulmanes qui voulaient vivre à la franqua, autant que la religion, les mœurs, les coutumes le leur permettaient. Et lorsque la conversation, par les chaudes journées, languissait un peu, la princesse priait doucement : PAGE 3 : – Dites, Mademoiselle Bonnevial, racontez encore une fois votre procès.&#13;
Puis tandis que montait lentement la fumée bleue des blondes cigarettes d’Orient, la princesse évoquait ces magistrats sévères s’assemblant pour juger sa douce amie française, si gaie, sérieuse, si droite, si honnête !…et cela lui paraissait être un conte fantastique des Mille-et-une-Nuits !&#13;
Malgré l’affection de son frère, malgré toute la tendresse de sa belle sœur – pour laquelle elle eut toujours la plus profonde reconnaissance –, la pauvre exilée avait le mal du pays. Dès qu’elle le put, elle rentra en France et participa, sous la direction de Mme Paulin, à la création d’une école professionnelle pour jeunes filles. Pas de traitement fixe. Lorsque la directrice avait un peu d’argent, elle partageait avec les professeurs. On tentait une expérience, et l’on était riche surtout d’espérances ! Le succès fut la récompense de tant d’efforts. Le conseil municipal de Paris reprit l’école qui, désormais, appartiendrait à la ville, et qui devint l’école professionnelle de la rue Gauneron (18e arrondissement).&#13;
Marie Bonnevial était donc à nouveau professeur de l’enseignement public, et de tout son cœur elle se voua à sa tâche d’éducatrice. Restée célibataire pour des raisons de famille, regrettant de ne pas connaître la maternité, ses élèves étaient ses enfants, et jusqu’au dernier jour, lorsque quelqu’une de celles qui avaient suivi ses cours lui écrivait, elle ne signait jamais autrement que « une de vos filles ».&#13;
Ce qui aurait suffit amplement à remplir une vie, n’était pas suffisant pour son activité. Appartenant au parti socialiste, à la Fédération de la Libre pensée, à la Franc maçonnerie, à la Ligue des droits de l’Homme, elle trouvait encore le temps de s’occuper de toutes les œuvres sociales : caisse des écoles, bureaux de bienfaisance, colonies scolaires, syndicats, coopératives, etc. et de collaborer à divers journaux, notamment à La Fronde. Enfin elle comptait parmi les apôtres du féminisme.&#13;
La bonne graine qu’elle a semée autour d’elle dans tous les cerveaux germera sûrement. Ces jours-ci, une de ses anciennes élèves me racontait qu’une fois, en entrant dans la classe, elle avait lu ces mots, tracés sur le tableau noir : « Mesdemoiselles, je vous prie d’être très attentives, car je suis presque aphone, pour avoir trop défendu vos droits futurs ».&#13;
Les jeunes filles d’alors ont peut-être oublié la leçon qui fut faite ce jour là, mais les femmes d’aujourd’hui se souviennent PAGE 4 : que des droits ont été acquis grâce au travail incessant et persévérant de nos devanciers, auxquels nous devons le bien-être et l’indépendance dont nous jouissons.&#13;
A Marie Bonnevial, qui consacra toute sa vie à ses idées, nous devons une éternelle reconnaissance. La meilleure manière pour nous de ne pas être ingrates, c’est de travailler à notre tour pour ceux qui nous suivent.</text>
